Daytona Bike Week - Sunday, May 02, 2010
We had 7 members ride (guys only!) to Florida again this year to test their mettle against mother nature. Once again, Ma won, with snow showers delaying the start and splitting the group up. A few of the guys ended up riding, with most trailering. A good time was had by all once they got there!
|
Swamp Roar - Friday, October 27, 2006
We had a GREAT turnout for this annual event! The castaways enjoyed a beautiful ride through the countryside of Suffolk. They paraded in through the Peanut Festival...over 700 bikes this year! An impressive sight, for those of us watching! Everyone split up to either stand in line for food or buy some, and we had several members ride the bull before they left! Check out the pictures!
A great yearly event overall!
|
Rumble Thru the Tunnels - Friday, October 27, 2006
We had several intrepid members take on this ride this year, after last year's less than successful ride. They were pleased with the organization and enjoyed the ride.
|
Driver Days Parade! - Wednesday, October 25, 2006
We had a great turnout, thanks to Cheryl and Jim asking some friends to join us! It was quite cold, but spirits were good. Lucinda provided leis for everyone, so we were quite festive in spite of the leathers. We had the most riders in the parade....even beat out the Blue Knights! Everyone split up afterward to investigate the festival, but we had a good time!
|
Sherri Parker Memorial Ride - Wednesday, October 25, 2006
Joe, Donnie, Susan, Richard, Lucinda, Ben, Ashley, and Tom braved a cold, wet ride to support this charity. We went down some nice roads, and most of us stayed for the parade thru Driver Days. Unfortunately, the bike show was cancelled, so we hung around, hoping that Ashley's straight would win her a prize. No luck for her, however, but Susan got the worst hand! Afterwards, some of us went to Chili's to get the chill out and enjoyed a leisurely lunch. All in all, not a bad ride, in spite of the weather!
|
Southside HD - Friday, September 29, 2006
Sunday Liz, Mike P, Tom, Sheela, Ralph, Lisa, Paul and Tracy met up at Southside HD for there annual cancer poker run ride. All though we didn't complete the ride we did complete our objective......That was to finish up at Monks for cheeseburgers and onion rings along with some of Ralphs bad country music. Pictures to follow.
|
Where's the Fire Run? - Wednesday, August 23, 2006
Whew....it got hot for this ride! Castaways members met and rode with ACMC to this ride for the Sentara Norfolk Burn Trauma Unit. Between both clubs we had about 16 bikes. Sure was nice to have the green shirts....we could find each other easily in the crowd at Hooters! It will be even better when we get our patches! It was nice to see old friends!
|
Crabcake Ride, July 8th - Sunday, July 23, 2006
Paul led 11 riders to Annapolis, MD. for crabcakes. Although everyone didn't get crabcakes, we certainly enjoyed the ride and company! Afterwards, the guys had to go cigar shopping, and the ladies searched out crab pins. Then a ride across the Bay Bridge, down the eastern shore, and back home!

Zip Line Ride
Paul is still interested in setting up a ride to West Virginia, with one day there on a zip line in the treetops! Current thinking is a weekend in September. It sounds exciting, so contact him for more information.

Castaways Rally #2, May 22-24, 2010 - Sunday, May 02, 2010
Our second annual Rally was held this weekend. Saturday, I hear there was some knee-boarding action, and some attempts at water ski-ing! A few sunburns didn't douse the mood as the day wound down into a great cookout for all. I'm still waiting to see some pictures!

Thanks for updating the website! - Thursday, May 06, 2010
Now I know what I'll be doing for the rest of the year... riding with all of you!! CAN'T WAIT!! :) Sharon
|
Salty Dawgs Ride - May 02, 2010
Pretty decent turnout today for the Salty Dawgs! Ralph, Richard, Paul, Donnie, and Mark attended for the Castaways! The ride was really long, but it looked like Mark was destined to have the best hand...4 aces! Mark, did you win?
|
Re-Cap of events 2009-2010!
No, this website hasn't been kept up to date particularly well in the last year or so, but please don't judge us by that. In a typical year, we have 11 meetings a year, Always ride New Year's day for sure, ride several charity rides and co-host the Rotary Rumble. We typically have a fall weekend ride to the mountains for Fall Foliage, did a 3 day summer run last year to Maggie Valley, NC., have a zip line run this year, and started our own camping 'Rally' last year at North Landing Resort! We have social events, including a Christmas, St. Patricks, 4th of July, and Halloween Costume Parties. We usually get together a couple of times a year to raise money for someone or some charity, too! So we ARE an active job....just not on the internet a lot! (But man, can we EMAIL!)

Ride for Driver Tornado Relief
Five of us met at the IHOP on Frederick Blvd in Portsmouth to gear up for the charity ride that started at Bayside HD. Ralph, Paul, Tracy, Lucinda, and Richard met Cheryl, Barry, and Marty at Bayside. A last minute decision was made to break off and go for an extended ride (Sorry, Cheryl, we missed you!) instead of following the group back to Bayside. Over 300 bikes rode, and raised over $5000 for the Red Cross relief effort! The ride was well planned and escorted. We left Driver, and rode throughout Suffolk back roads, and ended up in Smithfield eventually. It was a nice day on the bike and a good charity!
|
Castaways Summer Party 2008
Scott and Carolyn once again hosted a great party at their house in Chesapeake. We had a great turnout, and for once, no electronics were introduced to the pool! Several rousing games of pool volleyball ensued, and a canonball contest! Karaoke was short lived, but entertaining! There was plenty of fabulous food and lots of great conversation! Thanks for having us again, Scott and Carolyn!
|
Tangier Island Ride
Laurel tried again, and was successful in enticing the club for a ride to Tangier Island in August. We had 12 bikes, and 21 riders! What a turnout! Unfortunately, after an early breakfast and quick run to Onancoke, we found the ferry has been cancelled. We turned instead to Chincoteague for entertainment and ended up spending about 2 hours holed up in a restaurant while the heavens opened up and spilled out torrential rain and hail. Once we had a break, we dashed for home, but we certainly enjoyed socializing with each other, and loved seeing the head turning number of bikes out for a cruise! Great job, Laurel!
|
Ladies Night #3
On August 30th, we held our 3rd Ladies' Night! A few of us met at Wild Wing Cafe and enjoyed good food, good conversation, and listened to an awesome 80's band! (Yes, ladies, we danced!) Sorry so many couldn't make it, but Kim, Liz and I had a GREAT time! Ladies, that was only the 3rd Ladies' night in a one yr span... let's try harder this year for at least every-other month, ok? Sharon :)
|
Edmarc Ride
As is tradition, the Castaways Riding Club supported the Edmarc Dice Run on June 18th. We rode with the Hampton Roads Riders on a lovely ride throughout Suffolk and back to Roger Brown's in downtown Portsmouth. We enjoyed spending time with old friends supporting a great cause!
|
Graduation party at Sharon & Dan's
We had a great time at Sharon and Dan's graduation party for their daughter Allison! They had a great setup in their backyard, and our favorite DJ, Cheryl played our favorite tunes! There was dancing, drinking, great food, and, as always, great company! Thanks for inviting us, guys!

First 'Elder-Help' Day
We met at Liz's promptly at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 31st to start our first 'Elder Help' project! Liz's neighbor, Marie, was ready for us to go to work. Ralph, Marty, and Richard worked on replacing 4 sections of fencing, reworking and hanging a gate, and setting new posts in the back yard. Ralph also spruced up the backyard with a little trim, and Becky and sons painted two doors for Marie. In the front of the house, Paul and J.D. jumped right in on scraping the gutters, pressure washing and painting them. When they were done, the bushes in front of the house came out, and after a quick pressure wash of the brick, some roses and mulch (donated by Liz) filled the gap in the garden. Inside, Sharon and Tracy worked to replace and add blinds throughout the house. A little spackling, replaced door gear, and cleaning of the sidewalk and driveway later, and we were done. Poor Liz had to run all over the place getting extra materials, and was kind enough to provide a nice lunch and drinks all day. Sounds easy, but we really worked hard, and our efforts were greatly appreciated. I heard Marie proudly telling her neighbors and friends about us. Well done to all who helped! This went a lot further than just donating money, and is something we hope to continue from time to time!

Everything else... - Thursday, May 22, 2008
Okay, here's what's new.
Paul has a price for T-shirts, we have to get a final decision on the color for the T-shirts and we will be ordering them next month.
Ralph is setting up another weekend ride to Atlantic city - leaving Friday about noon and returning on Sunday. Please contact him if you're interested.
Paul is still hoping to get at least 5 rooms lined up for a trip to Asheville, NC for a weekend to see the Biltmore place. Contact him if you're interested.
The Edmarc ride is June 14th, and some of us plan to ride it. Watch your email for details.
Also, when I mentioned another video scavenger hunt, I received an enthusiatic 'YES', so we will plan on one soon.
Welcome to new member, Tom Lahowetz!!!
Lots of upcoming events, so keep tuned!

Myrtle Beach Bike Week 2007 - Thursday, May 22, 2008
We had seven members travel to Myrtle Beach Bike week this year. The weather cooperated, but Liz said it wasn't as much fun on two wheels....can't drink as much! Anyway, Paul, Tracy, Ralph, Laurel, Liz, Sharon, and Dan all enjoyed their time, and came back....ready to go back? I'm sure we have some pictures coming!
|
Rotary Rumble - Thursday, May 22, 2008
The Rotary Rumble was held on May 10th this year. Around 60 bikes participated in the ride, and over $10,000 was raised! The Chesapeake Rotary once again did a great job, and the Castaways helped in many ways. Thanks especially to Liz, Tracy, Jim, J.D., Mark, and Sharon, who served on the committee to plan the event. As far as I know, no one got lost, so the road captains and tailgunners came through for a great ride. Thanks so much to all the castaways who helped, and Congratulations!
|
Polar Bear Ride - Monday, February 18, 2008
Ralph, Laurel, Don, Susan, Tom, Marty, Tracy and Paul decide to brave the freezing tempertures (64 degrees) to ride with the GWRRA in there annual Polar Bear Run. Please see pictures posted on webshots.

LADIES' NIGHT #2 - Saturday, November 03, 2007
Not that we want all u guys to kno just how good a time we had, but suffice it to say ladies, we MUST do this again! I enjoyed it so much! The food, the drinks, the company, the conversation, the "naked skydivers"... all of it was great! Did we bust up some stress or what? Let's schedule another for December! (Sorry guys, i'll work on a club get-together soon, too, but for now this is LADIES NIGHT!!!) Ladies who missed it, look for the next one. We're gonna try to make this a monthly thing and we want everyone to come out!!!
|
Urbanna Ride - Saturday, November 03, 2007
Jim, Marty, Tom, Sheela, and Paul took off early in the morning with 25 to 35 mph winds and light rain from Hurricane Noel to ride to the oyster festival in Urbanna VA
After paying a $10.00 parking fee (car's paid $20.00) shedding some unneeded clothes and walking a mile to get to the festival, we down some oyster fetters, clam chowder, BBQ, etc. and just enjoyed the small town fair. As the day went on the weather turn out to be pretty day for a ride.

Driver Days Parade
OK Mates, I received our position in the parade. We are No. 16 in the line.
Sat. morning, meet at 7/11 at Victory Blvd. and I 264 at 8: a.m. and depart for Driver at 8:30 a.m.
We need to be lined up by 9:00 and the parade starts at 10:00
Let's make a big showing again this year.

Swamp Roar 2007
Well....what to say about this one? We had an EXCELLENT turn out for this favorite ride in Suffolk. Unfortunately, it appears that everyone else has marked this as a favorite ride, too, and event handlers were apparently overwhelmed with the turn out. Rumors of 1500 to 2000 bikes turned out for a ride when about 800 were expected. The Peanut Festival is always great, but most of us left about halfway through. Hopefully they'll be more organized next year. It was great seeing everybody, though!
|
Rumble Thru the Tunnels 2007
While most sat this one out, several Castaways joined the American Cruisers for this annual event. Although the riding was a bit trying in places, just being with the (3000?, 5000?) other bikes is always a trip. Bayside did a great job organizing and providing vendors for the end of the ride. The band was great! Maybe we can convince a few more to go next year!
|
Outer Banks Run!
Lots of Castaways turned out for a LONG ride to the Outer Banks for BBQ and fun! Most came back full, sunburned, but grinning from a great day of riding with friends!
|
March of Dimes Ride
The Castaways support this ride, one of our yearly favorites! As an added bonus, it was held in memory of our Skipper's grandson. About 300 bikes gathered at Bayside, and enjoyed a very well organized escorted ride down Rt 17, and back up to Bayside for food and fun! Thanks to all who supported this worthwhile Charity.
|
Sherri Parker Memorial Poker Run
12 Castaways met for Breakfast at IHop and 10 rode out to Driver for this ride. We signed up, but opted for a "Joe" ride through Suffolk, and parts beyond! Some of the riders returned for the barbecue, and Donnie even earned a "Coconut!" for this ride! (Ask him for details!) A great showing by the Castaways!
|
July 5th Party
Scott and Carolyn opened their house to us for a great afternoon party! Everyone brought a dish, and the host provided the hot dogs and burgers, and the food was great! After a little rain to get things started, a serious game of pool volleybal went for hours! A few of us went in the pool voluntarily, others, not quite so, but all had fun! Thanks for the great party, Scott & Carolyn!
|
Club votes - Thursday, August 02, 2007
At our last meeting, the club voted to co-sponsor the Rotary Rumble again next year!
|
Sad Ride
The Castaways recently had the honor of riding escort for the family to the burial of the Caleb Wright, 1 day old grandson of our "Skipper" Joe and Jeri. There was a terrific turnout, and the support of the club was greatly appreciated by the family.
|
Results of Elections! - Monday, June 25, 2007
Castaways met in June and voted on new officers. Officers hold their positions for two years. Re-elected were Joe Strait, aka "Skipper" as President, Tracy Brooks as Secretary, and Liz Banks will be replacing Mike Pasquarette, who is stepping down as Treasurer. Congrats to all the officers! We know you'll do a great job for the club!
|
Relay for Life - Monday, June 25, 2007
Some members of the club joined ATRC to start the Chesapeake Relay for Life Walkathon for Cancer. We heard they were well received, and a more worthwhile cause couldn't be found! Thanks for representing us well, guys! Photos online!
|
Laconia Bike Week
Well, the group is back from Bike week, and we saw some wonderful sights while in New England. 9 from the club attended, and everyone saw some different parts of New England, from the Maine Coast to the Adirondacks. Visit the Pictures for some idea of the great riding to be found up North!
|
Norfolk Sherriff's Foundation Ride - Sunday, May 20, 2007
10 bikes and 14 Castaways enjoyed a beautiful Sunday supporting this ride. It was mostly city, but just riding, and being with friends was great! We DID come in second for largest group...so it's within our reach soon! American Tradition RC appreciated the support!
|
Rotary Rumble a BIG SUCCESS
Castaways co-sponsored the Rotary Rumble this year with the Great Bridge Rotary Club. It was held on May 12th, and despite a dreary start, the day turned out fine! Joe, Richard, and Mark mapped out a great route and led 65 riders from Route 17 in Portsmouth to Camp Skimino. We had Bagels from Yorgo's, Donuts from Krispy Kreme, and coffe to start, and finished with a great lunch provided by Sysco and Moseberth's. The Jamestown Ferry afforded us a look at the festivities for the 400th anniversary celebration at Jamestown. A live band was provided, and lots of money rolled in. The Rotary was please that the International President made a short visit, and the local girl scouts sang of couple of cute songs, too. Everyone seemed to enjoy the outting. Although the final total isn't in, estimated profits are over $10,000, which will benefit Edmarc Children's Hospice, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, YMCA, March of Dimes, and Children's Harbor. A WELL DONE goes to all CASTAWAYS that provided door prizes, planned, got sponsors, distributed flyers, and lead riders for this great event! Photos are posted!
|
PM BUG RIDE in CHESAPEAKE - Wednesday, March 28, 2007
It was a nice ride last night out in chesapeake. Thanks for comming out guys. It was a good idea for Sharon to lead since she took the brunt of the bugs as we rode through Blackwater. See everyone soon. Dan
|
New Year's Day Revisited! - Wednesday, January 10, 2007
Several more members gather on January 2nd for a more extended ride! I hear that Chris and Jason were anxious to try out their new Harleys on the roads. Congrats to them on their first "club ride" and on their new bikes!
|
By-laws passed - Wednesday, August 23, 2006
Whew....finally! The castaways voted unanimously at their August meeting to pass their by-laws. All the business is behind us now, and hopefully we can concentrate more on the fun stuff! Thanks, Paul and Tracy and everyone who helped put them together!
|
Xmas party 2007 - Thursday, May 22, 2008
Ralph hosted a great party at his house this year. This was our first Castaway's Only Christmas part, and it was a hit! The food was great, and the company even better. Thanks for being such a great host, Ralph!
